Saturday (26 April) is the annual day of collective action which falls within Fashion Revolution Week.
The idea is simple: get out into your local community and stitch in protest against disposable fashion. Amidst busy Saturday shoppers, we repair our torn pockets and broken seams and spark conversations on making Loved Clothes Last.
Mend in Public Day stands as a beacon of change in a world inundated with fashion waste. By participating, you’ll be part of a global creative action resisting the cycle of excess through repair and reuse. Get your repair pile (or other fibre crafts!) at the ready, find a Mend In Public Day event near you or host your own. All skill levels and Fashion Revolutionaries welcome!

FASHION REVOLUTION WEEK 🌏️
This Thursday, 24 April, marks 12 years since the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh. The Rana Plaza building housed a number of garment factories, employing around 5,000 people. The people in this building were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands. The building collapsed and killed 1,134 people and injured more than 2,500 others, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. The victims were mostly young women.
During Fashion Revolution Week, we remember the lives lost and demand that no one should die for fashion.
This year the theme is `Think Globally, Act Locally`. Each country and region of the world participates in and is affected by the global fashion system differently. But we all live on this big blue planet together. We are all connected. Today is also Earth Day – the perfect day to remember that our beautiful planet needs our help.
Individual efforts, when multiplied by tens and hundreds and thousands of people, create powerful movements that cannot be ignored.
This week take some time to think about how you can contribute – to safer work conditions, to transparency and accountability, to end throwaway culture and to end human and environmental exploitation in the global fashion industry. Your voice – and wardrobe – matters.

Her TikTok, Pep4Planet, is a treasure trove of facts and tips as lo-fi and genuine as she is, encouraging followers to avoid consumerism, purchase pre-loved, reuse and repair, combat food waste, and attend a protest or two while they’re at it. And she still finds time to make great music!

Notes: skirt in a small (! I`ve never been a small anything in my life), exactly as the pattern. Lovely, thoughtful details in a nice size range. Super quick sew though and a good beginner pattern. Jacket in size range I-J. I was right on the cusp but sized up. Ended up cutting 6 strips of binding instead of the suggested 4 and used flannelette instead of wadding. Also used a jeans needle because some of those binding junctions are hefty."

It`s Autumn here in Queensland, which means... well, not much. It`s still pretty hot. So this idea of using our Skye Shorts as swimwear has us ready to jump into the deep end! 🏊🏼

"I had been hunting for a new swimsuit for our upcoming European vacation but had no luck finding anything I liked or that wasn`t hugely expensive. Eventually I decided to make my own and I`m so glad I did. This is the #KaiaSwimsuit from @PaperCutPatterns with the #PeppermintSkyeShorts from @PeppermintMagazine in carnation and clove swim double jersey from @WeAreTheFabricStore
Firstly the patterns. This was my first time making swimwear so I was a bit apprehensive, especially as I would have preferred to make a toile first to check the fit , but I didn`t have anything to make it out of. I needn`t have worried about the construction of the swimsuit as the Papercut pattern instructions were so clear and detailed. I had no problems at all. I used the 2 different zigzag stitches recommended in the instructions and it came together really well. I love the twist neck detail and I`ve always loved their colour blocked version so I copied that.
I like to wear shorts over my swimsuit and the Skye shorts were perfect for this. I omitted the pockets and left the hem raw. With an elasticised back waist they`re super comfy and I love the wide legs.
I bought the fabrics in the Fabric Store sale earlier this year. They`re a four-way stretch and were easy to work with and feel so lovely to wear. Unlike my current swimsuit that feels a bit like a wetsuit to get on and off, these just glide over your skin - so nice. So now I`m beach ready." 🏖
